Scientist (f/m/d) in the area of unstructured data analysis applied to climate extremes research

FZ and ScaDS.AI are starting a new research cluster bridging data science and environmental and climate research. We are looking for a highly motivated scientist (f/m/d) in Leipzig to strengthen our team in the area of unstructured data analysis applied to climate extremes research. The payment is according to TV-L E13 (100%). The position is initially limited to 3 years with possibility for extension.


Together with your know-how, we want to advance the knowledge transfer of Machine Learning and AI in the field of climate extremes. You will use natural language processing (NLP), machine learning, and data mining to identify and quantify drivers and/or impacts of different weather disasters (e.g. floods, droughts, heatwaves, storms) from unstructured data (e.g. newspapers, websites, social media).

Your tasks include, among others:

  • Developing NLP methods for extracting information on extreme events (e.g. adaptation measures, societal drivers, observed impacts) from different types of text data (e.g. social media, Wikipedia, reports, news)
  • Developing tools to study interlinkages and conditional dependencies in complex systems, including compounding pattern
  • Develop creative visualization of the research outputs
  • Writing high-level publication of research results
  • Writing research proposals, coordination of resulting projects (optional)
  • Supervision of graduate students (optional)

Requirements Profile

  • PhD in a field of study with strong reference to data analysis/computational sciences/digital humanities
  • Excellent programming skills (e.g. Python, R, Julia)
  • Extensive experience in data analysis (including machine learning, natural language processing and visualization)
  • High level of independence
  • Strong interest in highly interdisciplinary research (collaboration with different UFZ departments desired)
  • Experience in coordinating and managing software projects desirable
  • Good written and spoken English. German language skills are an asset
  • Interest in dealing with large amounts of data and data analysis
